German CVUA releases safety analysis report on dietary supplements containing algae oil
2025-03-10
On December 30, 2024, the German Chemical Veterinary Inspection Agency (CVUA) released a safety analysis report on dietary supplements containing algal oil.
Among the 30 samples analyzed, there were no abnormalities in DHA and EPA content, but the DHA/EPA ratio fluctuated significantly. Algae oil contains a considerable amount of cholesterol, ranging from 504 to 4490mg/kg, which is comparable to certain fish oil products. The content of fatty acid ethyl ester (Fe tts? Ure ethyl ester) is significant in some samples, which may be related to the addition of ethanol during algal fermentation. Some samples have peroxide values exceeding the specified standards, indicating possible oxidation issues. Most samples contain antioxidants, but some samples are not labeled as required. The inspection also found that 11 samples violated health declaration regulations, especially regarding the statement about the effects of DHA and EPA on cholesterol levels.
